Maramures - The Land of Wood
A two day tour featuring the true wooden culture of Maramures
A two day tour featuring the true wooden culture of Maramures
This tour is designed to reveal the originality of this destination. In Maramures the art of woodcraft is very elaborated, bringing to life astonishing wooden architecture and unique carved gates.
The Unesco Wooden Church from Desesti dated from the 18th century, is an amazing example of the traditional wooden architecture and naive art of Maramures. The mural paintings from the interiors are still very vibrant and beautifully preserved.
The Merry Cemetery from Sapanta is a must see if you visit this beautiful region, as it is one of the most peculiar burial grounds in the world. It is a synthesis of the local wood craftmanship, humour and ancient believes.
Sapanta Peri Monastery is situated in a charming dendrological park on the Tisa river shores and prides itself with one of the tallest wooden construction in the world. The rare sight of such a monumental construction executed entirely of wood is astonishing.
The Maramures Village Museum from Sighetu Marmatiei is an open-air museum, housing many valuable wooden constructions, household utensils and installations specific to this region. It`s a very nice place to make a walk in nature and admire a complex wood village.
The „Saint Nicholas” Unesco Wooden Church from Budesti was built in 1643 and it is the largest from the eight Unesco Churches from Maramures. Besides its mysterious entrance portal, it houses a valuable collection of wooden and glass painted icons dated back to 17th and 18th century.
Barsana Monastery is one of the most impressive religious sites in Romania, nestled in a serene, picturesque scenery. Also, the Monastery Museum owns manuscripts and holy books of heritage from the 16th to 19th centuries, old icons and a rich collection of local folk art objects.
We will also visit some well preserved traditional villages with beautiful carved wooden gates, a woodcarver and shingle workshop, water powered traditional installations and a local distilery where we will taste the local spirit, a fruity double distilled brandy, called palinca.
Optional: A horse-drawn carriage ride through the beautiful, idyllic countryside.
For a full local experience, I would also suggest to serve the tasty, organic, home cooked lunch at traditional guesthouses and to be accommodated at an agroturistic local farm-guesthouse.
